BRITAIN’S motorists are more concerned about growing car costs than ever before, a recent study has revealed.

Worrying statistics showed that almost half of the UK’s drivers may no longer be able to afford to drive their own cars, with insurance premiums spiking following the Autumn Statement.

On average, home and car premiums have jumped by £51 since last November, leaving car owners desperately scrambling to save money wherever they can.

The study, conducted by the UK’s largest online car servicing provider, Servicing Stop, found that 41 per cent of drivers are actively trying to reduce the amount they drive their car in an attempt to limit their overall motoring costs.

Taking into account the responses of over 1000 British drivers from 18-70 years of age, the study also found that a massive 60 per cent will carefully shop around for the best insurance deal, while 38 per cent will do the same each time they fill up with fuel.

Drivers are also cutting back on luxuries, with 35 per cent opting to wash their cars themselves rather than having them valeted.

As many as 20 per cent of motorists are even trying to be more frugal by emptying their boots in order to lighten the load and save fuel.

“Over the last two years, the tax rate on home and motor insurance premiums has doubled and it is very likely motorists will face further hikes, as insurers raise premiums this year,” Oly Richmond, CEO and founder of Servicing Stop said.

“The best course of action is for motorists to shop around to make savings across all their motoring costs.”

Across the board, motoring prices have risen significantly in recent years.

Earlier this week, car hire company Auto Europe released figures showing the average UK driver spends over £160,000 in the course of their lifetime on motoring costs alone.
