#16 Alfa Romeo Stelvio
First sight of a new Alfa Romeo is always an exciting event, and 2017 heralds the first time the Italians have branched properly into SUV territory. An iconic carmaker’s first attempt at a new breed of vehicle is always a potentially awkward experience as so much is being done for the first time. Thankfully, the wonderfully named Stelvio is spared that eventuality, having been modelled on the 2016 Giulia, which surprised everyone last year by not being rubbish.
The Quadrifoglio edition (pictured above) utilises pretty much the same mechanicals as the Giulia Quadrifoglio saloon. In essence this means that the Stelvio is effectively a large family SUV powered by a Ferrari engine. Both Alfa, and especially Ferrari, like to keep the engine association on the down low, preferring to label the twin-turbocharged, 2.9-litre V6 as being ‘inspired by Ferrari technologies and know-how’. But that’s all academic really; anyone buying the Stelvio is – in broader engineering terms – getting a five-seat family SUV rocket propelled by 75% of a Ferrari California T’s bi-turbo V8. Woof!
