land-rover-defender-ac-002The new Land Rover will come with a four cylinder engine as well as a V6 option.

It will contain the largest ‘breadth of capability’ of any vehicle that the company has produced, according to Phil Popham, the company’s marketing director. This statement represents the importance of the Defender’s replacement, with the model being engraved into the company’s history for 65 years.

Everything kept under wraps for now

The design of the vehicle as well the engineering layout has so far been kept under wraps. It seems that JLR want to keep it secret for as long as possible. It has been confirmed however that the styling of the vehicle has been given the green light. We’re unlikely to see what the production version looks like until 2016.

Before that however, a concept vehicle may be showcased. The Geneva Show next March has been discussed along with the New York show in the spring of 2015. The Frankfurt Show next September is also another possibility.

Combining monoque with aluminum

Although the vehicle’s structure has not been revealed, it is believed that the company’s aluminum monocoque along will be present. An aluminum superstructure may also be included. Using such a technique will duplicate the Discovery Model. This particular vehicle was successful in the market but weighed over two tonnes.

However the Discovery used steel whereas the Land Rover Defender will use aluminum. This will reduce the overall weight of the vehicle.

Ingenium engines

The new Defender is likely to come with the Ingenium four cylinder turbocharged diesel and petrol engines along with V6 engines. As standard, the engines will mate to eight and nine speed automatic gearbox transmissions. Manual transmissions have not been confirmed.

The vehicle has the aim of surviving the world’s toughest conditions, according to Jaguar Land Rover. It will have an overall theme of premium durability. The vehicle will come with world-class mechanical durability and superb off-road ability.
