Emissions scandal widens as KBA investigates other major carmakers 0

Worried about winter approaching? Don’t be, Volkswagen is kindly warming our planet for us… and it seems they might have a few helpers.

In the aftermath of the Volkswagen emissions scandal, German car regulators Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA) have revealed they’re investigating other carmakers for possible diesel emissions manipulations.

Focusing on 23 manufacturers and covering 50 models in total, the new suspects range from more German heavyweights, to popular US and French brands. The tests were instigated after VW admitted in September that it had been cheating emissions tests. The company finally accepted the blame, after it became public that VW group vehicles were emitting large levels of NOx, and more recently, CO2.

11 million vehicles worldwide are affected with the ‘defeat devices’ and another 800,000 have been revealed to have false economy and CO2 figures. KBA said in a statement, “Since the end of September, KBA has been investigating whether further manipulation of emissions, of nitrogen oxides in particular, is taking place in the market”.

The KBA has said that two thirds of the models have been tested so far, but they won’t reveal any findings until everything has been evaluated and the data is “legally robust”. To measure the emissions, testers are comparing the lab test numbers with their own real-life results using portable meters.

We’ll soon find out whether more car brands will be joining Volkswagen in the biggest scandal to hit the auto industry in a very long time.
