Ford celebrates the Mondeo’s 20th anniversary 2

2012_09_Ford-Mondeo-MaroonThe Ford Mondeo was launched 21 years ago. It’s been a very popular model since the 1990’s in the UK.

Since launching in 1993, the car has sold a tremendous 1,379,352 models. Back in 1994 127,000 Mondeo’s were sold, a figure to be proud of. From the get go it’s always been a great car. As standard, the car had driver airbags, a somewhat revolutionary move at the time. The car was also  used a high speed police car. The ST200 had a 2.5 litre V6 24V engine.

Such hype was made about the car originally that it held the record for having the biggest poster near the M6 for an advert. The car has also appeared in Casino Royale, a James Bond Hollywood smash hit.

It has continuously been one of the best selling large cars from 1994 – 1998, 2001 – 2006 and 2008.

The Mondeo’s awards include the What Car? Car of the Year 1993 and 2001. It has also won the 2001 Auto Express Car of the Year in both 2001 and 2007.

It has even delved into Motorsports, with the Mondeo is dominating the British Touring Car Championship in the year 2000.

To celebrate this tremendous anniversary, Ford has released two special edition models. Out come the Graphite and the Titanium X Edition. The Graphite model will set you back £15,995, a good value for money deal when you consider what it actually comes with. The car comes fully equipped with LED day time running lights, rear lights, tinted glass along with Bluetooth technology, Eco mode driver information system along with air conditioning. Quickclear heated front windscreen will help deal with those annoying moments when the driver can’t see the front windscreen. There are other handy features such as headlight courtesy delay which helps keeps the car for a few more seconds once the driver has exited the vehicle.

The engines include two petrol units, a 1.6 Duratec Ti-VCT and 1.6 EcoBoost SCTi. There are also two diesel engines including 1.6 and a 2.0 litre Duratorq TDCi engines which come with the Graphite variant.

The 2.0 litre diesel has C02 emissions of 119g/km. That means just £30 a year in road tax. The car can reach a brilliant 62.8 MPG. The 1.6 EcoBoost is pretty powerful with a top speed of 134 MPH and a 0 – 62 MPH time of 9.3 seconds.

Will the Ford Mondeo last for another 20 years?
