Relay car theft caught on CCTV 0

Behold car crime of the future…

A security camera has captured the moment two thieves steal a Mercedes from outside the owner’s house without either having to force entry or steal the owner’s keys.

The car is pinched using a technique known as ‘relay theft’. It involves one person standing at the victim’s front door waving a relay box that detects the signal emitted by the vehicle’s car keys which are usually left nearby. When the box finds the signal, it ‘relays’ it onto the other thief – also holding a box and standing by the car door, which is then unlocked.

Mark Silvester, from the West Midlands Police crime reduction team, said: “To protect against this type of theft, owners can use an additional tested and Thatcham-approved steering lock to cover the entire steering wheel”.
