Used car market has declined by 5

The used car market has declined by 5.1% throughout 2017 so far; the fall coming in the wake of record-breaking figures in 2016.

The second quarter of the year saw used car sales drop by 13.5% compared with the same period in 2016 – 300,000 fewer transactions.

Diesel car sales declined by just 0.1% in the three months, refuting the predictions of a cliff-edge like drop in sales. That said, the true ramifications may become clearer at a later date. New car registrations (of all types), hybrids and alternatively fuelled vehicles meanwhile are in the midst of a sales surge, transactions up by 25% during the second quarter.

The most popular colours in the used car market are: black, silver, blue and grey remained the top sellers. Red, green and yellow are the sixth, seventh and tenth most popular colours respectively. White, once the most popular, is fifth.

SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes said that despite last year’s record figures not being matched, the used car market is far from being in crisis. He did however, implicate the Government as a contributing factor to the underwhelming performance figures, saying: “Although the market remains at an exceptionally high level, given the softening we’ve seen in registrations of new cars in more recent months, looking ahead it is vital that the Government secures the conditions that will maintain consumer and business confidence if we are to see both markets continue to prosper.”

The South-East and North-West of England are the top regions for used car sales; London climbed to sixth place from eighth between the first and second quarter of the year, overtaking Yorkshire and Scotland.

The top ten used cars in the second quarter of 2017 are:

  • Ford Fiesta – 83,222 sales
  • Ford Focus – 74,477 sales
  • Vauxhall Corsa – 72,341 sales

  • BMW 3 Series – 44,798 sales
  • Mini – 32,914 sales
