Majority of UK motorists clueless to car maintenance 0

Majority-of-UK-motorists-clueless-to-car-maintenanceCars and their technology are becoming more advanced every day, but UK motorists are still struggling to understand the very basics behind car maintenance. Simple tasks such as checking tread depth and changing light bulbs on vehicle lights are beyond the capabilities of the majority of British motorists.

A new survey has revealed the startling truths behind the ignorance of UK drivers when it comes to the most simply aspects of car upkeep.

The survey, by vehicle insurance provider, LV, showed that those drivers in Yorkshire and Humber were the most likely to have been self-taught – three in ten (31%).

33% of respondents said their car maintenance skills were self-taught, compared to 35% who said their dad taught them.

Yorkshire-based mechanics, Simon March and Co said: “Most people rely on garages to check their vehicle once a year and in their mind, the MOT is a maintenance program, not a test.

“I believe that car maintenance should be taught alongside learning to drive and be a bigger part of the test. Motorists should be able to check lights, tyres and levels as they are weekly checks as per the highway code but most people are frightened to have a go at maintenance and will not seek advice.”

Four in ten drivers (42%) say they are unable to change a tyre, one in six (17%) are unsure how to check their tyre tread and one in twenty (5%) would struggle to open their car bonnet in an emergency.

Drivers are blaming their lack of education (37%), a lack of time to learn (11%) and intimidating new technology (8%) for their maintenance issues. The survey suggests that women are nearly twice as likely as their male counterparts to have problems doing car maintenance.

There are signs that younger people are sparking something of a revival, with 18 to 25 year olds better equipped to deal with a vehicle emergency than the 30, 40 or 50-somethings. This is partly thanks to recent changes to the UK driving test, designed to ensure that new drivers do have a basic level of maintenance skills.
