Mini models under fire after recall 0

Mini has recalled a total of 235,000 cars worldwide, with 30,000 of them being here in the UK. The Car’s affected could potentially catch fire it has been discovered. A fault in the electric water pumps have been spotted as the cause.

Models affected

The Mini Cooper S and John Cooper Works models which were built between 2006 and 2011 are the models under scrutiny.

Fire occurring

So far there have been four instances of a resulting fire which includes one in the UK.

Not a long process

All owners are set to receive a letter from MINI which invites them to have their electric water pump replaced. Fortunately for owners, it’s free and will not take up much of their time. The company have said that the whole procedure will take just 30 minutes at a local Mini dealership.

Turbocharged engines

There is a slightly more complex problem with models that contain turbocharged engines. They are equipped with an extra water pump. This cools down the engine once it has been switched off by taking the heat out of the turbocharger.

Statements

A company spokesman said “Under high operating temperatures an electro-migration can occur at the circuit board installed in the additional water pump. This can lead to a failure of the additional water pump or smouldering and even a fire cannot be excluded.”

The company have maintained that the actual chances of a fire being caused are very minimal in another statement released.

Unexpected

This is quite a strange piece of news that you wouldn’t expect from the British based company. You don’t usually find faults in Mini manufacturing. This is quite a shock in the automotive industry. We believe too much shouldn’t be read into the recall as chances of a fire have been determined as unlikely.

Big plans and investment

A tremendous 200,000 Mini’s are built at the Mini Oxford plant. BMW announced in 2011 that £500 million worth of investment would be put into UK production over the next three years. This could mean a brand new Mini being built at the company’s Cowley factory.

Largest car market

The North American car market, the second largest in the world, was Mini’s largest industry last year. China, the world’s largest car market was the fastest growing for the company.
