The Ford Fiesta is the bestselling UK Car ever! 3

Ford-Fiesta_2014_800x600_wallpaper_06The Ford Fiesta is now the best-selling vehicle of all time here in the UK. The Ford Escort has finally been knocked off the  top spot.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) have stated that 4,132,294 Fiesta’s have been sold since it’s first appearance in 1976. For 27 of the Fiesta’s 37 year old life, the car has led the small car market here in the UK, according to Ford themselves. In 2013 the Ford Fiesta was on top of the UK charts with 121,929 sold.

The Ford Escort was replaced by the Ford Focus back in 2000. The Escort managed to sell 4,105,192 vehicles in its 32 years of being available on the market.

Back in 1979, there was a million Fiesta’s made. It later become known as a favourite with boy racers with the XR2 being released. This particular model was capable of hitting a 100mph, powered by a 1.6 engine under the bonnet. A diesel version eventually came out, with a continuously variable transmission model added later in 1987. In that particular year the Ford Fiesta had it’s best ever year for sales, managing 154,000.

The MK3 Fiesta came with ABS brakes along with five doors, which was a new feature for the vehicle. Airbags mounted within the steering wheel became a standard feature in 1993. A passenger airbag became standard in 1996 on the MK4.

The ST model didn’t arrive until 2002, which included a 148 BHP engine along with more economical choice engines.

The current model, which is the MK6, first appeared in 2008. The Econetic diesel model is able to achieve a superb 76 MPG, with emissions of just 98g/km. In 2012, the Ford Fiesta line-up received a revamp. This included a ST hot hatch along with a 1.0 litre three cylinder Ecoboost model. The Ecoboost model has become very popular, currently accounts for 40 per cent of sales. The Zetec is the most popular trim out of them all, which costs £12,495.

Mark Ovenden, Chief of Ford Britain outlined the legacy of the Fiesta, saying ‘The Ford Fiesta has gone from strength to strength and today’s car combines style, value, driving dynamics and remarkable technologies such as the multi-award-winning 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine. It continues to outsell its nearest retail competitor by more than two to one – and that really tells the story of this extraordinary car.’
