Extra large on that car please! 0

It appears that our nation has an obesity problem and cars have to fit around that obstacle.

1 foot wider

Cars are now being made bigger to accommodate people who are overweight. Official statistics reveal that 60% of adults are obese. Shockingly 1/3 of 10 – 11 year olds are also obese. Overtime in the last five decades, cars have been made a foot wider.

Car makers are looking to adapt to future generations and make their cars bigger to accommodate the obesity crisis.

BMW “Plump my ride”

BMW are involved in a project named “Plump my ride” where 800 volunteers were used to analyse how obesity affects driving. All volunteers ranged from different shapes and sizes, from slim to obese. The biggest difficulty was that of obese people attempting to enter and exit the vehicle.

Ralf Kaiser, who is a member of BMW’s ergonomics team, recognised the fact that cars need to change as the problem doesn’t look like it will be sorted anytime soon.

He told a British Newspaper “People are getting more obese and we want to find out how that limits their range of motion and how our vehicles can adapt to the changing needs of our customers,”

“We know that a lot of overweight and obese people have problems in daily life, and in the car this starts with getting in and getting out”

He also pointed out that simple things like looking behind to check for space can also pose major problems.
“In general, these aren’t sporty people. We already have things like the parking distance control, which shows obstacles on a screen when you are reversing,”

“For someone who can find it difficult to turn 140 degrees to look behind them, they can now just look at the screen. The study will mean we can look at things more scientifically and build a car that at least 95 per cent of people can use.”

The problems posed could be worse than first thought.
Ideally cars like these shouldn’t be made but unfortunately the nation is becoming more and more obese. Until the nation gets healthier, it seems that we could see larger and more practical cars being made to suit the majority of motorists on our roads.
