Maria Sharapova’s Porsche, twice the speed of her serve! 1

sharaSharapova made a lot of headlines in the automotive industry recently with her stunning plug-in hybrid Porsche 918 Spyder, chauffeured by former F1 driver Mark Webber at a pre-Wimbledon party.

The tournament has now finished. Sharapova crashed out in the second round, ending her hopes of winning a second consecutive title in a row.

The Porsche 918 Spyder is capable of a top speed of 214 MPH, which is more than double the speed of Sharapova’s 100 MPH serve. The car has an enormous price tag of £700,000, in case you were thinking of buying one.

Sharapova’s chauffeur for the day, Mark Webber, who is a race driver for Porsche in the FIA World Endurance Championship, said “Having just driven the Porsche 919 Hybrid race car at Le Mans last weekend, I already know that this technology can produce incredible results.  The 918 Spyder is the closest thing to a road-going version, and it’s just as amazing – especially as it can be driven into London for free”

The vehicle is officially known as the most powerful road car ever built by Porsche. The plug-in hybrid is designed to be as good on the track as it is on normal roads.

In just 2.5 seconds, the car can race from 0 – 60 MPH, an outstanding time for any car! Most average sports cars would take around 7 seconds to achieve that feat, whereas the Porsche 918 Spyder can achieve 124 MPH in just 7.2 seconds.

Although the car has a tremendous amount of power, it manages to avoid the London Congestion Charge. Being a plug-in hybrid the car manages produce very little C02 emissions. Not only that, but the 918 is able to reach 93 MPH in pollution free electric only power mode. The electric power combines with a petrol engine. The car manages to deliver an outstanding 94.1 MPG of fuel economy and carbon dioxide emissions of 72g/km.

That petrol engine is a 4.6 litre V8. The electric power comes from not one but two electric motors, which combine with lithium-ion batteries. Together both can reach 887 BHP. That’s the equivalent of nine Ford Fiesta’s!
