Volvo to sell thousands of cars to Uber 0

Uber and Volvo have come to an agreement which will see the Chinese owned Swedish car maker supply the ride-hailing firm with thousands of cars. Uber will add its inhouse developed autonomous driving tech to the vehicles.

The agreement, which is not exclusive, will see Volvo provide Uber with thousands of ‘base-vehicles’ between 2019 and 2021, as the latter ups the rate it offers “mass produced self-driving vehicles at scale”.

The new agreement follows a previous one between the companies that saw Volvo supplying Uber with a ‘base car’ to add their own technology. The new deal involves thousands of vehicles already fitted with the ‘core’ developed tech; Uber will then add its own additional autonomous technology.

The non-exclusive agreement will allow Volvo to continue developing its own self-driving technology, independent from Uber.

Volvo’s chief executive, Håkan Samuelsson, said: “The automotive industry is being disrupted by technology and Volvo Cars chooses to be an active part of that disruption”.

Uber said the company was “thrilled” to be working with Volvo on the large-scale self-driving project.
