Nio knocks Lamborghini off the top spot 0

Nio-knocks-Lamborghini-off-the-top-spotA new benchmark has been set when it come to the title of fastest road vehicles. The Chinese Nio EP9 has taken the title previously held by the Lamborghini Huracan, after a sizzling performance at the Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit in Germany.

According to Nio, the supercar lapped the challenging 20.6km circuit in 6:45.9 minutes, significantly beating the former record, held by the Huracan which stood at 7:05.12 minutes. However, it should be stated that the Lamborghini completed the circuit in wet conditions.

The LP9’s startlingly fast performance has been attributed to its four electric motors, each with separate transmission. The total combined power output of 1000kW allows a claimed 0-200km/h time of 7.1 seconds plus a top speed of 313km/h.

The battery packs are removable with a driving range of 427km – sufficient for more than a few laps of the Nurburgring Nordschliefe.

What enables the EP9 into road-legal territory is Nio’s plans to produce only six supercars, each priced at just over £1.5 million. There are plans to produce an additional 10 EP9s.

The Chinese company has also announced its intention to engineer a potential rival to the Tesla Model X. This will be known as the ES8.

The company already has more than 2000 employees and is backed by a group of internet entrepreneurs, along with Lenovo, Sequoia Capital, Temasek, Tencent and TPG. It won the inaugural Formula E driver’s title in 2015.
