Petrol giants Shell is set to open a series of electric vehicle charging points at its petrol stations across the UK.

This decision acts as a further indication showing the gathering momentum towards electric vehicles currently gaining traction within the automotive industry.

Drivers will be able to recharge up to 80% of their battery in a 30-minute period at Shell forecourts in London, Surrey and Derby from the middle of October. 10 service stations are set to be kitted out with the technology by the end of the year.

This will be Shell’s first foray into the UK electric car sector and comes shortly after the petroleum giant acquired NewMotion, a company from the Netherlands that has 30,000 private charging points at homes and offices across Europe.

Shell said the decision to expand into charging was taken as a result of the rapid growth of electric vehicles. The UK now has over 110,000 of the cars, up from none ten years ago.

“There’s no doubt the electric vehicle market is developing fast. And we want to offer customers choice: it doesn’t really matter what kind of vehicle they’re driving, we want them to drive into a Shell station, refuel in whatever capacity the fuel is,” said Jane Lindsay-Green, UK future fuels manager at Shell.

The locations of the charging points were chosen based on how busy they are. All but one are in London. “Locations that have a lot of through-traffic, and also locations where perhaps the existing electric vehicle infrastructure needs boosting,” said Lindsay-Green.

Shell also admitted that it has invested in upgrades to the local electricity grids, making it capable of handling the rapid charging points. The UK is the first market where Shell is piloting the Recharge offering, which is to expand next to the Netherlands.
