Classic Peugeot 205 set to sell for whopping £210000

A 1980’s Peugeot 205 T16 is set to break the world record by selling for an eye-watering £210,000 later this month.

The classic, now 32 years old, is a rare ultra-fast turbo and is built to rally specifications.

There were only ever 200 T16s produced, due to rally rules. The model for sale has only 750 miles on the clock.

At present, the current world record price for a second hand T16 is £155,000; car experts are predicting this sale will surpass that by some margin.

The Peugeot is one of a number of ‘modern classics’ as enthusiasts celebrate the cherished cars of their youth by forking out big bucks for the retro models.

The Peugeot 205 Turbo has a place in the hearts of many petrolheads and is regarded by many as the ultimate hot-hatch.

The T16 was conceived in the wake of a set of controversial rallying regulations which stipulated that constructors had to build production models of their race cars. Marques were required to manufacturer at least 200 examples for general sale.

The Group B regulations saw some of the fastest rally cars ever built and heralded a golden era of the sport. The down-side was the higher speeds saw a series accidents and crashes.

The class was terminated in 1986 after Finnish driver Henri Toivonen and his co-driver Sergio Cresto died following a crash.

Despite its smaller size, the 200 bhp engine saw the T16 tear along at speeds of over 130 mph. Its handling and acceleration were incredible. Between 1985 and 1986, the T16 surpassed the Audi Quattro’s record and notched up 16 race victories.

This edition is up for sale after its previous owner died. The American collector acquired the T16 twenty years ago.

The auction house dealing with the sale, Bonhams, said : “This T16 should bring a world record price – it’s quite simply among the best surviving examples in the world.

“It’s in original condition and has recorded under 1,000 miles in over 30 years, which is astounding.

“The car’s authenticity combined with the booming market for hot hatches, particularly from that famous rallying era, should ensure a huge price.

“Values are so high at the moment because the generation that understands and appreciates cars such as this is getting to the point where they can afford to pay for them.

“We have had enquiries from people all over the world regarding this car.”

The car will be sold in Monterey, California, on August 18.
