  1. The Clio was launched in the UK in March 1991.
  2. When the Clio launched in the UK it was already European Car of the Year.
  3. The starting price of the Clio when it first went on sale was £7,190.
  4. The word ‘Clio’ comes from the Greek for ‘made or to make famous’.
  5. Renault sold 21,124 Clios in 1991; in its first full year of sale (1992) it sold 34,701.
  6. The Clio was designed to replace the much loved Renault 5.
  7. When the second generation arrived, the Clio accounted for 49% of Renault’s sales in the UK with over 300,000 sold.
  8. Over 12 million Clios have been sold across the globe since its introduction, over 1.2 million in the UK alone.
  9. The original Clio advertising campaign, featuring Nicole and her Papa had eight commercials. The final edition saw Nicole spurning Vic Reeves at the altar for Clio driving Bob Mortimer.
  10. Nicole was played by Estelle Skornik, who was judged the second most recognisable person in the UK ahead of Chris Evans, Bob Mortimer and Prime Minister John Major.
