Number of Brits complaining about car hire in Europe rises by a third 0

The number of Brits to make complaints regarding car hire in Europe has jumped by more than a third over the last 12 months.

There were 505 complaints in total in the year leading up to June 2017, compared with just 382 the previous year.

The figures were compiled by the UK European Consumer Centre (ECC) which helps consumers who have issues with companies based in the EU.

The most common complaint was people saying they had been charged extra after returning the car.

Countries with the most complaints were Spain, Italy, Iceland and Malta.

Many customers find they are charged weeks or months after returning to the UK for damage to the car, but in many cases these photos can be taken days after the car was returned.

Other common complaints include insurance issues and fuel policy charges.

Andy Allen, director of the UK ECC, said: “Our general advice to consumers hiring cars abroad is, where possible, to return the car to someone in the office, get them to check the car and sign it off as in good condition,”

“If you have to leave the car, take some photos – showing that it was returned in good condition.”
