A look back Toyota Sports 800 (1965 – 1970) 0
The Sports 800 was Toyota’s first attempt at a sports car and all things considered, it was a pretty impressive offering. The MG Midget and Austin Healey Sprite were clearly large sources of inspiration during the design process; it was based on the Publica mini-car and sold in the tax-friendly Kei-class in the Japanese domestic market.
It was powered by a two-cylinder engine which was fairly powerful, giving the 800 a lively and competent near-100mph performance. Unlike its better known main competitor, the Honda S800, the Sports 800 had a fairly regular technical make-up, with a firm and solid rear axle and drum brakes on all wheels.
It’s rare to see a Sports 800 on these shores, but a few have been imported by collectors.
