This particular 1972 Toyota Crown 2600 De Luxe is an extremely rare sight on British roads, showrooms or museums. Japan stopped exporting the car to these shores in the late 1970s, so the sight of a Crown, even at a motoring event is not common.

When first released, the fourth-generation Crown (they’d been manufactured since 1955) was a car ahead of its time. It featured electronically controlled automatic transmission plus anti-lock brakes, front and rear bumpers – a styling trend that only became ‘the norm’ years later.

Sadly for Toyota, all the extras included on the Crown proved to be rather overwhelming in the US and UK. Sales were disastrous and the decision was made to pull the car as an export.

According to reports, there are only two of the Crown 2600 De Luxe in Britain at the moment (at least in a road worth state).
