Toyota release real life Tonka Truck 0

Toyota-release-real-life-Tonka-TruckIf any extra proof was needed that Aussie blokes can’t spend enough on their pick-ups: Toyota has transformed its HiLux into a genuine, real life Tonka Truck.

In Australia last year, the Toyota HiLux was the best selling vehicle – of any type – marking the first time in history a pick-up had topped the sales charts in the country.

To celebrate the fact, the 150 or so designers and engineers based at Toyota’s Headquarters in Melbourne decided to mark the occasion by coming up with the HiLux Tonka edition, a unique one off special.

“We have taken Tonka out of the sand pit and reinvented HiLux from top to bottom and from nose to tail,” said Toyota Australia designer Nick Hogios.

“Inspired by the Tonka trucks that kids play with in their backyards, the HiLux Tonka Concept goes way beyond the already hugely capable abilities of HiLux to traverse rocks and other rugged terrain.”

Toyota’s unique concept is actually adept at handling real off-road terrain and unlike most other show cars, it can actually drive.

Under the fiery yellow and black body is a HiLux SR5 that’s been pumped up on pretty potent off-road suspension.

It also has extra under body protection for the occasion an aspiring Crocodile Dundee decides to take it deep out into the outback.

Sadly, for most Aussies blokes however, the HiLux Tonka edition is one of a kind, and Toyota aren’t planning to release any more special editions of the hot seller which has sold 920,000 editions since it was first released in 1968.
